Mater Misericordiae University Hospital
Dublin, Ireland
À propos du projet
The April 2023 opening of the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital’s Rock Wing marked a significant milestone in Ireland’s healthcare infrastructure. Constructed by John Sisk & Son Ltd under emergency legislation enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic, this €103 million, nine-storey wing was designed to address the urgent need for increased bed capacity, particularly for intensive care and isolation facilities. The fast-track approach to the project resulted in significant cost savings for the Irish taxpayer, while still delivering a state-of-the-art facility capable of serving an additional 5,000 patients annually.
Design goals
As the Rock Wing is designed to accept secondary transfer referrals from hospitals within the central Trauma network, it was essential to ensure that the interior could withstand the heavy foot traffic and potential impacts associated with an emergency department. At the same time, the hospital wanted to maintain a welcoming and calming environment for patients and staff.

Solutions
Construction Specialties (CS) was approached to provide a comprehensive wall protection scheme that could address these competing needs.
The solutions from the Acrovyn® range included HRB-50N combined hand and crash rails and SCR-80 crash rails in the circulation corridors. Two levels of crash rails ensure that walls are sufficiently protected from damage from trolleys and wheelchairs, while the separate circular handrail provides a safe and comfortable grip for patients requiring support.
Heavy duty SSM-20 corner guards were installed on external corners, and Acrovyn PVC-Free Sheet was applied in areas where an impact-resistant finish was required to full height of the wall.
Finally, in the single-bed ensuite rooms, BL-10V bed head protector profiles keep beds away from painted wall surfaces.
All Acrovyn products were supplied in a calming Pearl Grey colour, complementing the rest of the interior decor. Additionally, stainless steel low-level rails in a brushed finish were installed around reception desks to protect them from impact damage.
Acrovyn solutions not only provide robust protection against wear and tear, but also integrate into the building’s design, ensuring that the Rock Wing remains a safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing environment for all who use it.
